About Veracruz

Veracruz, officially known as Heroica Veracruz, was founded by Hernán Cortés during the colonial period. Veracruz is the major city of Veracruz’s state on the Gulf of Mexico (5), and its port is Mexico’s major seaport on the east coast (1). The city is an economic and historical hub.

Education

The Universidad Veracruzana is the main center of higher education in the state of Veracruz with five campuses (5). In Veracruz, there are many universities such as Veracruz Institute of Technology, Cristóbal Colón University, and UNIMEX (5).

Culture & Tourism

The Port of Veracruz contains some wonderful historic architecture from the Spanish colonial period and several interesting marine museums (1). With a pleasant climate, good cuisine, and archaeological sites, the port of Veracruz is a favorite seaside resort for Mexican and foreign tourists (6).

Veracruz’s main attraction are Veracruz Aquarium, the City Museum, Fort San Juan de Ulúa, the Naval Academy, the cultural center, the municipal palace, the old lighthouse, Zócalo, Teatro Clavijero and the archives,and historical library (5;2).

Transportation

Veracruz is served by national and international flights through General Heriberto Jara International Airport (4). Veracruz’s port is primarily a commercial port and is Mexico’s oldest and largest port (5). It has become the principal port for most of Mexico’s imports and exports, especially for the automotive industry (5).

It is also a popular tourist destination and an important fishing port (1). Foreign cargoes through the Port of Veracruz included 12.7 million tons of imports and 4.5 million tons of exports (1). 75 percent of all port activity in Mexico takes place in Veracruz (6).

Economy

Veracruz’s major economy sector includes commerce and industry. Veracruz port’s top imports include corn, petroleum coke, wheat, soya, full containers, steel, and fertilizers, scrap, vegetable oils, sorgum, rice, canola, vehicles, pig iron, tallow, and benzene (1). Veracruz port’s top exports include automobiles, tubes, steel, sugar, fluids, molasses, clinker, calcium hydrate, calcium oxide, wheat flour, machinery, ethanol, steel tanks, coffee, fresh fruits, fertilizers, sugar, fish and crustaceans (1;6).

Veracruz State

Veracruz State’s natural resources include gold, silver, iron, coal, copper, sulfur, silica, feldspar, calcium, kaolin, marble, and petroleum products (9). Veracruz State’s main agricultural products include coffee, vanilla, sugarcane, tobacco, bananas, coconuts, vegetables, corn and beans(9). Veracruz State’s major industries includes chemical, petrochemical, metals, processed foods, beverages, printing and publishing, textiles and machinery(9).
